The Argentine Association of Trial by Jury (AAJJ) celebrates Chubut’s Governor Mario Das Neves’ decision of presenting an Executive’s Branch bill of jury by trial to the provincial Legislature.
The bill provides for a classic jury system of twelve people, six per gender. The jury must render an unanimous veredict, although after a certain amount of deliberation, the judge can accept a jury veredict of 9 votes with a possibility of a new trial. Also, there is no appeal for the prosecution. Thus, the veredict of the jury is final.
The AAJJ has always supported the Governor’s position towards jury by trial and today, such electoral promise has been fulfilled. In both Buenos Aires and Neuquén provinces, jury by trial’s success is a reality. We assure the same will happen in Chubut.
